Monte Carlo: Rosberg wins Followed by the Red Bull. Alonso 7th

An incident-packed race which saw the deployment of the Safety Car on three occasions: Rosberg in the Mercedes claimed the win, ahead of Vettel and Webber. Alonso had a miserable race, and can only take comfort from the fact that Raikkonen finished behind him in 10th place. Massa crashed out of the race following an identical accident to the one he had in Saturday’s free practice

The horns on the yachts moored in the Monte Carlo Marina were able to sound their traditional ‘thank-you’ to the drivers at the end of the Monaco Grand Prix and salute ‘one of their own’: Nico Rosberg, who lives in the Principality, won the race for Mercedes, taking pole on Saturday and completely dominating the race on Sunday to claim his first win of the season. Nico grew up in the streets on Monaco where, exactly 30 years ago, his father, Keke, also won. Nico did face a host of problems in the race (that lasted almost 2 hours) thanks mainly to the deployment of the Safety Car (which came out 3 times) and due to the race being red flagged for 25 minutes following a crash at the Tabac corner involving the Williams of Pastor Maldonado and the Marussia of Max Chilton.

MASSA: IDENTICAL CRASH TO SATURDAY — Nico led Sebastian Vettel to the chequered flag, the Red Bull driver extending his lead in the World Championship over Fernando Alonso, who struggled and finished 7th, and Raikkonen, who finished 10th after the Lotus driver was forced to make a pit stop with just 8 laps to go following contact with Perez. Hamilton finished 4th, and only lost out on a podium finish as he was unlucky when the Safety Car came out for the 1st time: he had to slot in behind and wait for teammate Rosberg to pit, as Lewis was behind Nico on the track. The Safety Car was deployed following a crash involving Massa. It was an almost identical crash to the one the Ferrari driver suffered in practice on Saturday, when he careered into the barriers at the end of the pit straight and St. Devote: Felipe managed to climb out of his Ferrari on his own, just as he was able to do on Saturday, but medics made him sit down and put a brace around his neck before taking him to the nearby Princess Grace Hospital: Felipe was given the OK by doctors there, the Ferrari driver diagnosed as only having a stiff neck. It was a weekend to forget for him.

MALDONADO SCARE — But the race also saw another frightening crash, which brought out the red flag: it happened on Lap 45, when Chilton overtook Maldonado. The Marussia driver didn’t leave enough space when pulling back onto the racing line (he was punished and given a drive through penalty) Maldonado and the Williams running into the back of the Marussia. The Safety Car came out for the 3rd time following an incident involving Grosjean and Ricciardo at the Nouvelle Chicane – it was Grosjean’s 3rd crash of the weekend! Sutil, Button, Vergne, Di Resta and Raikkonen also scored points. Perez was one of the protagonists of the race (he put Alonso under so much pressure that he forced a mistake out of the Ferrari driver) but retired from the grand prix following damage probably caused during a collision between his McLaren and Raikkonen’s Lotus.
